THE DISORDER

Astigmatism is a very common type of visual distortion, caused by a cornea that is ovoid in shape rather than spherical. This creates two focal points on the retina.
Individuals suffering from this congenital, hereditary anomaly have imprecise vision irrespective of distance. Depending on the intensity of the astigmatism (from moderate to pronounced), distortions range from mistaking certain letters to seeing images as if reflected in a distorting mirror. If not corrected, this disorder causes headaches and visual fatigue.
